KST Kannada Kalike: Brief Introduction
KST Kannada Kalike, in its current form, was founded in 2020 and is a growing, community-driven educational initiative dedicated to teaching children the Kannada language, culture, and core values. What started as a small experiment or effort in online Kannada teaching due to the COVID-19 situation has now evolved into a vibrant learning community.
The “Kannada Kalike” program of Kannada Sangha Toronto was launched in 2020 under the leadership of Sri Nagendra Krishnamurthy and Sri Subrahmanya Shishila. Educational expert Dr. Purushothama Bilimale generously provided free training to the teachers. He also prepared the Kannada learning handbook, which outlines the methodology required for effective instruction. The current Kannada Kalike Committee of the Kannada Sangha is led by Sri Nagendra Krishnamurthy, Sri Subrahmanya Shishila, Sri Ragu Kattinakere, Smt. Sudha Subbanna, and the current KST President, Sri Sriharsha Hegde.
The KST Kannada Kalike program began modestly with 8 teachers and 62 students. Today, it has expanded to 27 committed volunteer teachers and over 225 students representing more than 35 municipalities across the Greater Toronto Area, as well as participants from Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, and even the United States. Over the past five years, more than 600 families have joined us on this enriching educational journey.
Our Kannada Kalike classes are conducted for one hour each week. A few classes are held in person, while most are conducted online (or virtually). The classes run annually from September to June. Parents or guardians of students enrolled in Kannada classes must be members of the Kannada Sangha. We warmly encourage all parents to speak Kannada at home, motivate their children to learn the language, and support this collective effort to preserve and promote our language, culture, and traditions for future generations.
In 2013 under the leadership of the late Sri Divakar Rudrapatna and Sri Nagendra Krishnamurthy, with the support of the Kannada Development Authority under the leadership of Dr. Mukhyamantri Chandru, KST extended its support to the ongoing Mississauga Kannada Shaale under Smt. Sudha Subbanna and instituted one more Kannada school in Brampton under Smt. Rajani Manjunathan. It is also important to recognize the efforts of our other distinguished KST community members who voluntarily conducted Kannada classes. Beginning in 2004, Sri B. V. Nagaraju conducted classes for about three years. From 2011 onwards, Mississauga Kannada Classes have been run by Smt. Sudha Subbanna, which continues even to this day along with teachers such as Smt Kusuma Shridharan, Smt. Jayashree Rao, in a hybrid mode of in-person and online teaching.
Later, in 2016, our community member Smt. Suman Kalasabail led efforts in starting Kannada classes as an international language in the Peel District School Board (PDSB). Several of our community members have taught Kannada in PDSB schools, including Smt. Shwetha Muthina, Smt. Indira Sutar, Smt. Hema Shankaranayarana, Smt. Shobha Hegde, Smt. Ashwini Manjunath, Smt. Veena Desai, and Smt. Mythri Muralidhara. KST supported all such Kannada Kalike initiatives and continues to do so. Every year, for the annual Kannada Kalike anniversary celebration, the students and teachers of Peel District School Board and the Mississauga Kannada Shaale are also invited.

ಕೆ.ಎಸ್.ಟಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ : ಪುಟ್ಟ ಪರಿಚಯ
ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕೆ.ಎಸ್.ಟಿ; ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆಯು 2020ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮೂಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬೋಧಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿತವಾದ ಸಮುದಾಯ ಚಾಲಿತ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೋವಿಡ್ -19 ಮಹಾಮಾರಿಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಆನ್ಲೈನ್-ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಯೋಗವಾಗಿ ಆರಂಭವಾದ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಈಗ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕಾ ತಾಣವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಲಿದೆ.
ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘ ಟೊರೊಂಟೊ ದ “ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ” ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು 2020ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ನಾಗೇಂದ್ರ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ಶಿಶಿಲ ಅವರ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಹಿರಿಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ತಜ್ಞರಾದ ಡಾ. ಪುರಷೊತ್ತಮ ಬಿಲಿಮಲೆ ಅವರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೆ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡಿ, ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬೋಧನೆಗಾಗಿ ಅಗತ್ಯವಾದ ವಿಧಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ‘ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಕೈಪಿಡಿ’ಯನ್ನೂ ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘದ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಸಮಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ನಾಗೇಂದ್ರ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ಶಿಶಿಲ, ಶ್ರೀ ರಘು ಕಟ್ಟಿನಕರೆ, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಸುಧಾ ಸಬ್ಬಣ್ಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಸಕ್ತ ಸಾಲಿನ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀಹರ್ಷ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕೆ.ಎಸ್.ಟಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ 8 ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಮತ್ತು 62 ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆರಂಭವಾಗಿ ಇಂದು, ಸುಮಾರು 27 ಮಂದಿ ನಿಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಸ್ವಯಂಸೇವಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಮತ್ತು 225ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಇವರು ಗ್ರೇಟರ್ ಟೊರೊಂಟೊ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ 35ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ನಗರಪಾಲಿಕೆಗಳಿಂದ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಒಟ್ಟಾವಾ, ಮೊಂಟ್ರಿಯೆಲ್, ಕ್ಯಾಲ್ಗರಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದಿಂದಲೂ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕಳೆದ ಐದು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 600ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳು ಈ ಜ್ಞಾನಯಾತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡಿವೆ.
ನಮ್ಮ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ವಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಗಂಟೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಕೆಲವು ತರಗತಿಗಳು ನೇರವಾಗಿ (in-person) ನಡೆಯುವುದಾದರೆ, ಬಹುತೇಕ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಆನ್ಲೈನ್ ಮೂಲಕ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ರಿಂದ ಜೂನ್ ವರೆಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ತರಗತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನೋಂದಾಯಿಸಿದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಪೋಷಕರು ಅಥವಾ ಪಾಲಕರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘದ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಾತನಾಡುವಂತೆ, ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಸಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉಳಿಸುವ ಈ ಒಮ್ಮತದ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಂಬಲ ನೀಡುವಂತೆ ನಾವು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪೋಷಕರನ್ನೂ ವಿನಂತಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘವು 2013 ರಲ್ಲಿ ದಿವಂಗತ ಶ್ರೀ ದಿವಾಕರ್ ರುದ್ರಪಟ್ಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ನಾಗೇಂದ್ರ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ ಅವರ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ, ಡಾ.ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಚಂದ್ರು ಅವರ ನಾಯಕತ್ವದಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಪ್ರಾಧಿಕಾರದ ಬೆಂಬಲದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಿಸ್ಸಿಸ್ಸಾಗಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಸುಧಾ ಸುಬ್ಬಣ್ಣ ಅವರು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮಿಸ್ಸಿಸ್ಸಾಗ ಕನ್ನಡ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಬಲ ನೀಡಿತು ಹಾಗೂ ಬ್ರಾಂಪ್ಟನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ರಜನಿ ಮಂಜುನಾಥ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡಿ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಲು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿತು.
ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ, ಹಲವು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ಸ್ವಯಂ ಪ್ರೇರಿತರಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ತರಗತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಮರಿಸಬೇಕು. 2004ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಬಿ. ವಿ. ನಾಗರಾಜು ಅವರು ಮೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಕನ್ನಡ ತರಗತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದರು. 2011ರಿಂದ ಮಿಸ್ಸಿಸ್ಸಾಗಾ ಕನ್ನಡ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಸುಧಾ ಸು ಬ್ಬಣ್ಣ ಅವರಿಂದ ನಡೆಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಕುಸುಮಾ ಶ್ರೀಧರನ್, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಜಯಶ್ರೀ ರಾವ್, ಮುಂತಾದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿಯರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ನೇರ ಮತ್ತು ಆನ್ಲೈನ್- ಹೈಬ್ರಿಡ್ ಮಾದರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದುವರೆದಿವೆ.
2016ರಲ್ಲಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಸದಸ್ಯೆಯಾದ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಸುಮನ್ ಕಳಸಬೈಲ್ ಅವರು ಪೀಲ್ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಶಾಲಾ ಮಂಡಳಿ (PDSB)ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಅಂತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಭಾಷಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವಾಗಿ ಆರಂಭಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಪಾತ್ರವಹಿಸಿದರು. ನಂತರ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಹಲವು ಸದಸ್ಯರು PDSB ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಬೋಧಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಶ್ವೇತಾ ಮುತ್ತಿನ, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಇಂದಿರಾ ಸುತರ್, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಹೇಮ ಶಂಕರನಾರಾಯಣ, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಶುಭಾ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆ, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಅಶ್ವಿನಿ ಮಂಜುನಾಥ್, ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ವೀಣಾ ದೇಸಾಯಿ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಮೈತ್ರಿ ಮುರಳೀಧರ ಪ್ರಮುಖರು. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೆ.ಎಸ್.ಟಿ ಸದಾ ಬೆಂಬಲ ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಈಗಲೂ ಮುಂದುವರೆಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷವೂ ನಡೆಯುವ ಕನ್ನಡಕಲಿಕೆ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕೋತ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೀಲ್ ಡಿಸ್ಟ್ರಿಕ್ಟ್ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಮತ್ತು ಮಿಸ್ಸಿಸ್ಸಾಗ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕ-ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿಯರನ್ನೂ ಸಹ ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
